Bethesda have released a wacky new gameplay trailer for upcoming Nazi-blaster Wolfenstein: The New Order. In this early gameplay section shown off in the trailer, we get to see a quick bit of in-game dialogue before being taken through two different approaches to the same level. First time through, series hero BJ Blazkowicz uses stealth and cunning to avoid detection while taking out the guards and officers in typically brutal fashion. Then the footage rewinds for a second look at the level with an all guns blazing approach that shows off just how much destruction one man can cause.
Speaking on the Playstation Blog today, Jerk Gustafsson, the executive producer at developer MachineGames, explained some of the gameplay changes and decisions made to incorporate the new stealth playstyle –
“Being aware of enemy commanders is an important part of stealth tactics, and also for combat in general. All commanders are equipped with a radio which they use to set off the alarm and call for reinforcements.”
“By silently taking out commanders unnoticed, they will be unable to raise alarms and call for reinforcements. Commanders also have the ability to call a second wave of reinforcements, making them critical to take out not only during stealth, but also when in full combat.”
Deciding whether you want to use stealth or just brutal assault will go deeper than simply your own playstyle however as different perks can be unlocked to improve your effectiveness in either style. Stealth players will be able to throw knives for silent kills, spot enemy commanders on the map and retrieve information from those commanders upon killing them. The more action driven players will be able to unlock perks to increase magazine size, speed up weapon reload times and increase the amount of ammo picked up from slain enemies. Jerk Gustafsson also pointed out the fact that playstyles can be mixed up to add to the fun –
“It’s great fun to initially sneak around and take down the area commanders and then just run around and mop up the regular grunts with two assault rifles.”
Wolfenstein: The New Order will release on the 20th of May for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
