For those not in the know, The International is run every year by Valve for their extremely popular game Dota 2. It is a tournament where 16 of the world’s best eSports teams will compete for this huge prize pool of 10 million dollars and all the glory that comes with it.
The International crowd funds its prize pool with Valve contributing 1.6 million dollars as seed money. The community has therefore contributed 8.4 million dollars in total to the overall prize pool for one of the biggest events in eSports.
The 8.4 million dollars generated by the community comes from purchases of what is known as the ‘International Compendium’ for which with every purchase 25% ($2.50) goes towards the prize pool for the tournament.
The Compendium was only published May 9th of 2014 and the community has managed to contribute 8.4 million dollars.
Just to give an idea of how huge this game is, that’s roughly 33.6 million purchases of the Compendium of which Valve themselves has made 252 million dollars.
The event will be taking place between the 18th and the 21st of July in the KeyArena, Seattle.
