If there’s one thing that’s really horrible, it’s having a beloved series just die off or get cut before it gets its conclusion. (cough cough Firefly cough) That’s why fans of the titular “room escape” game 9 Hours and 9 Persons 9 Doors and its sequel Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward were holding their breath after the second game to see if there were enough sales to warrant a final installment.
After months of waiting, they were finally greeted with: there weren’t.
However! After facing a ray of blinding light generated by the hearts and souls of those brave people crying out in retaliation, Aksys Games split open the heavens and announced that yes: there is in fact going to be a conclusion to the series!
In all seriousness, the fans are by in large the reason that we are getting the long-awaited sequel. Series writer and director Kotaro Uchikoshi stated that it was the support of the fans that allowed Aksys to continue development of the Zero Escape line.
I’ll most likely save a more in-depth analysis of the previous two games until the final installment is released, but I have to say, these are some of my favorite DS games period. They’re relatively rare, unfortunately, but if you’re really itching for a really suspenseful mystery-puzzle-drama-talking rabbit adventure (and you should be), find a way to get your hands on them.
The game is set to release both in Japan and in America in a dual-release sometime during the summer of 2016. It’s a bit of a wait, but if the other two games are any indication, it’ll be well worth it. Seek your way out, and choose carefully who you trust.
