I’m going to be the first to say that I am not an athletic person, since I’m the type of guy that gets winded walking down a Walmart cereal isle. Interestingly enough though, even I enjoy going out for a walk every now and then. Since finding this game last year, however, I’ve found myself going out more often and for much longer. Honestly, I’m probably missing the wagon here on a timely review, but since Zombies, Run! recently went free-to-play, I don’t think a little more exposure will hurt!
Zombies, Run!, despite my initial thoughts, is an exercise app and not a training simulator for Dragur.
What’s brilliant about the app is that it keeps its users running through pure motivation. Specifically, the motivation to not be eaten alive by zombies. When you begin a run, the app narrates a story through your headphones. The central plot revolves around you, starring as Runner 5, going out of your settlement to search for supplies or explore. As you run, you find resources and weapons that you can use back at your base in order to fortify your hub’s defenses in preparation for zombie attacks and raids.
While running, occasionally you’ll get an alert akin to “There are zombies on your tail, RUN!” When this happens, if you have “chase mode” enabled (you can turn it off for a more leisurely outing) you will have to pick up the pace to avoid being killed. While you do this, you can actually hear the zombies getting further away, as the app keeps track of how much distance you’ve made through either a GPS or a step counter, depending on your preferences. It’s quite jarring to suddenly hear horrifying moans directly in your ear, but it really does make for a fantastic adrenaline booster.
As I said before, Zombies, Run! is now free to pick up, so give it a try if you haven’t already. No matter how much running you do now, I can almost guarantee you’ll start doing more after you get it. Godspeed Number 5.
