Last generation a franchise that came to life was Call of Duty. Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare is effectively a genre-defining game. It was almost perfect, the multi-player aspect of the game was incredible, the story was surprisingly strong and at the time it was unique as most First Person Shooters were based on World War 1 or 2. The mechanics were also a stand out especially in comparison to other games at that time period. Modern Warfare was the game that popularized the Call of Duty franchise. The franchise has now sold more than 100 million copies. In this article I will be discussing why I believe this franchise is slowly dying and becoming increasingly less popular.
The gaming community is slowly starting to fall out with the franchise for several reasons. One reason I believe the games in the franchise are getting worst with every new installment excluding Modern Warfare 2 which I also found sensational. According to metacritic many agree with my opinion the most recent version of Call of Duty, Call of Duty Ghosts received an underwhelming highest metacritic score on 78. The Infinity Ward games always had a great story unlike that of the Treyarch games, now I am starting to believe the stories are now mediocre at best. The quality of the multi-player is also decreasing dramatically with gamers playing less and less multi-player with each game. People are not playing or watching as much Call of Duty now, when MW2 was released some gameplay commentaries received an astonishing amount of views. Even the view count on the Call of Duty Ghosts videos is poor for the most part in comparison to others in the series. So evidently the quality of the game being created is nothing compared to what it used to be as the interest levels are falling dramatically with each new addition to the series.
As well as the games getting worse time and time again, another reason I believe the Call of Duty series is fading is the annual release of the franchise. People are starting to believe the games are becoming too similar to each other, this is made evident due to the annualisation. Personally I feel Call of Duty Advanced Warfare is similar in many ways to Call of Duty Black Ops 2. Personally Advanced Warfare seems to be more impressive than previous installments in the franchise. Another reason I believe Call of Duty’s popularity is dying is the story lines are becoming very similar in each new rendition of the game. Also it is as though the developer do not care about the story at all as it is only there because it is expected to be there. I assume slowly over time the campaign aspect of the series will no longer be included in the series.
Personally I hope that Call of Duty Advanced Warfare returns the series to greatness and I also hope it re-revolutionizes the first person shooter genre all over again. If this is does happen the games we play could change entirely.
