After years of speculation the title of the newest entry to the Legend of Zelda franchise was announced earlier this morning at E3 2016. The newest game will be called “Breath of the Wild”. The game will deviate heavily from the usual Zelda formula incorporating many aspects of modern RPG’s such as The Witcher 3 and Skyrim.
The game will be completely open world much like modern RPG’s, allowing the player to explore a land approximately 12 times larger than Twilight Princess. Dungeons will still be prevalent, but emphasis on open world exploration is encouraged. Link can now scale walls, find equipment in the wilderness and cook various foods to improve his status. The equipment has seen a major overhaul compared to earlier iterations featuring a wide variety of armor and weapon choices such as spears, sticks and axes.
Unlike previous titles the player must be cautious when exploring new areas since certain enemies might be too powerful fight. Enemies now have visible HP bars and can be scanned by a new tool known as the Shiekah Slate. Link also has new techniques at his disposal such as the parry and disarm. Link can use his shield to deflect and potentially disarm opponents, quickly turning the tide of battle. Additional combat elements like dodging and slow motion sequences are new additions into the Zelda series.
Exploration and utilization of the environment is the main focus of the game since Link must forage the land in search of equipment in order to aid him in his quest. Food, equipment and alternate paths can be found by the intrepid traveler, and getting lost in the land of Hyrule is encouraged. Breath of the Wild will launch on both the Wii U and Nintendo NX in early 2017.
