Last month Pokemon fans got some big news when the three starter Pokemon for the upcoming Sun and Moon were revealed. We also got our first glimpses at the designs for the new Legendary Pokemon in the cover art. As of yesterday, Nintendo has officially released a teaser trailer featuring gameplay footage for the Sun and Moon legendaries.
Here are a few of the facts we now know about legendaries: Solgaleo and Lunala. For one thing, we now have confirmation of their names. Previously, fans have been using the names Nintendo listed for the copyright. This did not necessarily mean that the names for the Sun and Moon Pokemon would remain the same in the final game. It is not unheard of for a company to use working names for the copyright early on in production in order to keep aspects of the game a secret.
What has the gameplay footage revealed about these new Pokemon in battle? Solgaleo, the Sun legendary, is a psychic and steel type Pokemon. It has an ability called Full Metal Body. This ability will keep Solgaleo’s stats from being lowered by opponents with abilities like Intimidate. Solgaleo will also have a unique move named Sunsteel Strike. It is unknown at this time what the power and accuracy will be for this move, but it sure looks intimidating in the trailer.
Pokemon Moon legendary Lunala has been revealed as a psychic and ghost type. It will have an ability called Shadow Shield which will lower damage dealt by Pokemon with full HP. Lunala will also be getting its own unique move called Moongeist Beam. Both unique moves for Solgaleo and Lunala will ignore abilities of defending Pokemon.
Another interesting addition to the Sun and Moon games is the introduction of the new Pokedex. Now, we don’t usually get worked up about the Pokedex design when there are things like starters and legendaries being announced, but this new Pokedex is worth a mention.
Everyone remember Rotom? You know, the electric/ghost Pokemon from the Diamond and Pearl era that could possess various household appliances? Well he is back and this time he has learned how to possess a Pokedex. Scientists in the game have developed a unique body specifically to be inhabited by a Rotom in order to create the next generation of Pokedex. So, now the Pokedex has a face and it can talk. I’m sure that will not get annoying in the slightest. If it starts saying things like “hey listen” I am out.
Lastly, a few new characters have been revealed for the game, along with an expanded view of the Alola region. Of course, our tree themed professor, Kukui, is included in this new trailer along with his “mysterious assistant” Lillie. So far it is a mystery as to why she is so … mysterious. The “rival” of the game make a brief appearance. Hau is a young man who is described as your new friend in Alola.
Wow, we have been spoiled with new game information in the past couple of months. Who else cannot wait until Nintendo releases the next teaser trailer? Maybe we will get a new Eeveelution or Pokemon Type soon!
Pokemon Sun and Moon will be released in Japan, North America and Australia on November 18, 2016. It will be released in Europe on November 23, 2016.
