There’s no doubt that if you haven’t played the original version of The Last of Us, then buying the Remastered version is something you need to do right away. If, however, you’ve already played through the game fully on the PS3, it’s perhaps a little harder to decide on whether its worth buying. With no discount on offer to those who already have the original version, is it worth buying the game a second time around just for a visual upgrade?
Digital Foundry have now compiled gameplay sections from both versions for a direct comparison. The Remastered edition runs at 1080p and 60fps and uses improved anti-aliasing for smoother edges, better looking textures and improved lighting and shadows. Remember though that, as the name suggests, this is a remastered version of the original game, it’s not a remake and only makes some improvements while the core game remains the same; things look better but you might not be completely blown away.
Here is the video –
Naughty Dog only had around a year to complete the remaster and admitted several times that they struggled with it. They still managed to reach their goal of 1080p and 60fps however, and the difference in frame rate is something that you cant see in a Youtube video. The higher frame rate can make a huge difference to how smooth the game feels and, during areas where the frame rate will inevitably drop, the PS4 will handle it far better than the PS3 did.
Really then the choice of whether to buy it again depends on how much you enjoyed the game in the first place. It hasn’t had a detailed rebuild like Tomb Raider saw earlier this year, it’s more like the upgrades that the PS4 and Xbox One launch titles had as they moved across from the old consoles. The difference is, however, that those upgrades were discounted, and The Last of Us isn’t, though you do get access to all of the additional DLC content. The Last of Us is a game that will always be worthy of playing through again and, even if the graphics are only slightly improved, the super smooth frame rate will give you a much better experience so if you want to play through the game again, or try out some DLC you missed then it can be worth it providing you can spare the money. If you haven’t played it at all though then it’s definitely the ultimate package and is not to be missed!
